Clean Air, Safe Air: Essentials of Dental Air Quality and Nitrous Control

India R. Chance, RDH, CDIPC

November 2026 Course - Expires Friday, November 30th, 2029

Web Only

Abstract

Nitrous oxide is a familiar part of dental practice but safe use extends beyond delivery to the patient. This evidence-based course examines the often-overlooked connection between nitrous oxide scavenging, vacuum performance, evacuation maintenance, and occupational exposure. Using OSHA and NIOSH guidance, participants will explore how waste gas can escape into the operatory, how evacuation system performance supports effective scavenging, and why routine inspection and maintenance matter. Practical scenarios will help dental professionals evaluate their equipment and workflows, recognize potential exposure-control gaps, and identify corrective actions that support a safer dental environment.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify components of nitrous oxide delivery, scavenging, and vacuum/evacuation systems that influence waste-gas capture and occupational exposure.
  • Explain how patient factors, equipment leakage, scavenging performance, and vacuum/evacuation function can contribute to occupational nitrous oxide exposure.
  • Apply evidence-based inspection, work-practice, and manufacturer-directed maintenance strategies that support effective nitrous oxide capture and evacuation.
  • Differentiate safer practices from potential exposure-control deficiencies using applicable OSHA requirements and NIOSH recommendations.
  • Evaluate a dental operatory and nitrous oxide workflow to identify potential exposure-control vulnerabilities and select an appropriate corrective action.
